VCU represents the only Level 1 trauma center in a 70 mile radius. Situated in an urban environment and at the juncture of several major interstate highways, VCU is an ideal setting for training in trauma care. The trauma resuscitation bays are located within the Emergency Department. There are three trauma resuscitation bays for adult care and a fourth bed specifically dedicated to Pediatric trauma. All of the resuscitation bays are modular and designed to flex to double their capacity. In addition, the rooms in the Emergency Department are equipped to function as overflow trauma areas to accommodate mass casualties or multiple trauma alerts in succession.

FIRST YEAR

First year residents participate in trauma resuscitations while in the department. They also spend a dedicated month as part of the Trauma team and are responsible for responding to all the trauma team alerts.

SECOND YEAR

Second year residents in the department are responsible for securing all the trauma airways and assist in performing trauma procedures (central lines, thoracotomies, etc). A dedicated month in the Surgical Trauma ICU develops confidence in the ongoing management of these critically injured patients.

THIRD YEAR

Third year residents alternate leading trauma resuscitations in a well-defined rotation with their surgical counterparts.

As a busy, Level1 Trauma Center, VCUMC allows Emergency Medicine residents ample opportunity to learn the skills of managing all types of trauma in all age groups.
