The VCU Department of Emergency Medicine is home to the Virginia
Poison Center. The center, first
established over 30 years ago, is certified as a REGIONAL POISON CONTROL CENTER
by the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) and provides 24
hr/day toxicology services to the public and to the medical community. The
poison specialists respond to 30,000 calls annually. The faculty provide consultations on matters related to toxicology both
within the VCUMC and to providers throughout the Commonwealth.
Second year emergency medicine residents complete
a required toxicology rotation. While
on this rotation, residents complete an established curriculum, review
literature regarding diagnosis and treatment of critically ill poisoned
patients, review Poison Center cases including calls to the poison center from
the public as well as referring physicians, and provide consultations to
in-house services on toxicology matters under the direction of the toxicology
faculty.
At the helm of the Poison Center are our very own toxicology fellowship-trained attendings, Dr. Rose(PharmD), and Dr. Scott Whitlow. With the close proximity of the Center to the emergency department, we have easy access to official and even "curbside" consultatons. Feel free to visit the Virgina Poison Center's website for further information.
