Residency // Selected Training // Pediatric Emergency Medicine

VCU has a long history of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, with a separate area for the emergency care of children for over 25 years. This section of the Department is staffed primarily by faculty trained in Pediatric Emergency Medicine and operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Pediatric ED has 11 beds with two beds set aside for pediatric critical care.

The Pediatric ED is also the clinical site of the VCU Child Protective Team. This is a clinic exclusively devoted to the care of physically and sexually abused children. The largest center of its kind in the state and one of the largest in the country, the CPT provides residents with an opportunity to learn the nuances of the abuse exam and provides a venue for residents to become better equipped to diagnose, treat, and advocate for this crucial patient population.

Pediatric Trauma at VCU represents approximately 10% of all Level 1 trauma team alerts. Residents at VCU gain proficiency in pediatric airway management and Pediatric trauma care.

Several faculty in the Pediatric ED participate in international medical mission trips. Residents may participate in these trips.

During the first and second year, residents spend time every month in the Pediatric Emergency Department to facilitate a longitudinal exposure to pediatrics. Third year residents have a dedicated month in the pediatric side and are given increasing autonomy in the care of sick kids.
