HOW YOU CAN PREVENT ACCIDENTAL POISONINGS

Always keep drugs, pesticides, cleaners and other household products in their original, labeled containers.

Store all household products in locked cabinets or other secure place out of reach of children. Use child safety latches on drawers and cabinets. REMEMBER, CHILDREN ARE NATURALLY CURIOUS AND CANNOT READ LABELS.

Do not rely solely upon child-resistant closures on medicine bottles to prevent children from getting into the pills. These tops are helpful in making it more difficult for children to open bottles, but they are NOT "child-proof".

Never refer to medicine as candy, and do not take medications in front of children. Remember, children mimic adults.

Always read labels completely before taking any medicines or using any cleaners or other products. Never take medicine in the dark when you cannot see the label clearly.

Rinse empty containers before discarding them.

Know the names of all plants in your home and yard. Call the poison center to check on their safety.

Never mix medicines with alcohol.

Discard foods that taste or smell bad.

For each child or grandchild in the home, keep a bottle of Ipecac Syrup stored safely for use to induce vomiting if instructed to do so by the Poison Center or a physician.

REMEMBER, THE VIRGINIA POISON CENTER IS HERE TO HELP - KEEP THE EMERGENCY NUMBERS ON OR NEAR YOUR TELEPHONES.
