Through
cooperation with Medical Educational Technologies Incorporated (METI) and NASA,
the VCU Emergency Department is pioneering the way in patient simulation.
The
Human Patient Simulator (HPS) affords residents an incredibly realistic training
experience. The model is a life
size human model within a resuscitation bay. The simulator detects oxygen and expires CO2, it allows for
real-time modeling of various scenarios including the patient with inhalation
injury, multiple trauma, acute poisoning, altered mental status and more.
Residents
can practice invasive procedure such as intubation, pericardiocentesis, tube
thorocostomy within an actual clinical scenario and see how their interventions
affect the patient's recovery.
Furthermore,
the simulator serves as a research tool for modeling emergency care in diverse
settings such as city streets, battlefields and outer space.
