A proven leader in treatment and research, MCVH
was recently named on of the nation's "Top 100 Hospitals" by HCIA/Mercer.
MCV Hospitals is also ranked as one of the best in the nation by Gale Research
and many of its clinical departments received recognition by U.S. News and World
Report as among the best in the country. In 2006, MCV Hospitals was awarded the prestigious "magnet status" for nursing.
The entire ground floor of the Main Hospital is
occupied by the Department of Emergency Medicine. The Adult Department is split into two independently staffed sections, with 22 beds (which includes a 4 bed trauma bay) on the "Yellow" side and 20 beds on the "Green" side. The Pediatric
Emergency Departments is adjacent to the adult sections and has 13 beds.
An Adult Fast Track area of 15 beds operates 10 hours per day and
is devoted to the care of adults with minor illnesses or injuries.
We also have a new Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) (similar to a 23 hour observation area). This is staffed by physicians, residents, and mid-level providers. This 10 bed Clinical Decision Unit allows for the continued diagnostic evaluation and therapeutic intervention and observation of patients not requiring immediate admission to the hospital.
The Virginia
Poison Center is located within the Emergency Medicine complex. The remainder of
the ground floor consists of Emergency Medicine faculty, administrative offices,
and conference rooms.
New Developments
In 2005, Ground was broken for a new Emergency Department and Critical Care wing. This is located adjacent to the existing Emergency Department. We will have increased square footage with state-of-the-art design and easy access to transfer patients to continued critical care services. This is slated to be finished in 2007-2008.
