The original owner of the Williams House was William Henry Jones, a tobacco merchant of Richmond. Jones sold his home in 1899 to A. D. Williams, son of tobacco magnate T.C. Williams Sr.

In past years, the university has used the house as the School of Social Work and the School of Business.
