Ritter-Hickok House
back Social Milieu next

This antebellum home of William C. Ritter was the first residence to appear on the West Franklin Street block. After Ritter's ownership, the house was occupied by Samuel L. Harwood and then R.B. Chaffin. Mrs. Belle Hickok, of Baltimore, Md., bought the house in 1903.

The building was purchased by the Richmond Professional Institute for $17,500 in December 1939 from the estate of Belle Hickok. It was the sixth property acquired by the developing institute and continued in its use as a residence - this time as a women's dormitory - from approximately 1941 until the 1960s.
