Research interests:
This laboratory is engaged in NIH-funded research into the role of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in regulating intestinal transport of water and electrolytes. Since 5-HT and its receptors are present both on intestinal enterocytes and on enteric neurons, both mucosal and neural physiology are important. One model now being pursued is an in vitro model of intestinal obstruction. The early results suggest that serotonin receptors on enteric sensory nerves partly mediate the secretory changes seen when the intestinal mucosa is subjected to increased luminal pressure. We have the advantage of a unique availability of normal human jejunal segments, harvested during gastric bypass operations, for study.
