scaleQualifications for Weight Loss Surgery

Weight loss surgery is not intended for patients who have mild obesity. This life-changing surgery is for patients who:

  • Have a BMI (Body Mass Index) greater than or equal to 40 OR a BMI greater that 35 with life-threatening medical problems (high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, etc., to qualify). To determine what your BMI is, go to the American Society for Bariatric Surgery's BMI calculator.

  • Have medical problems directly related to obesity such as diabetes, hypertension, leg swelling, leg ulcers, GE reflux, urine control problems, menstrual irregularities, sleep apnea, obesity hyperventilation syndrome, joint pain, heel pain, high cholesterol, pseudotumor cerebri, shortness of breath, etc.

  • Have tried to lose weight through dieting.

Some insurance companies require the following:

  • Documentation of 5 years history of severe obesity.

  • Documentation of 6-12 months professionally supervised weight loss programs within the past year.
