Our center offers a
one-year clinical fellowship in advanced
laparoscopic surgery with a strong
emphasis on preparation for an academic
path.
Attendance
at major national meetings is expected
as is presentation of outcome data
and other research projects. Full
administrative support is offered
through our surgery center.
Research conducted
by 2004-2005 Fellows
A wide range of clinical
case load is offered with emphasis
on foregut surgery, including roux-en-y
gastric bypass, primary and revision
fundoplication, splenectomy, colectomy,
etc.. Community surgeons facilitate
fellowship case volumes avoiding conflict
with general surgery senior resident
staff.

FOCUS OF THE PROGRAM:
Obtain clinical and research
training in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery.
FELLOWSHIP
REQUIREMENTS:
Candidates must have completed an ACGME residency in general
surgery. The fellowship will be 50% clinical. Considerable
exposure to laparoscopic gastric bypass, fundoplication,
colectomy, etc. is planned. The fellowship provides excellent
exposure to teleconferencing and new technologies. The
fellow will have a 50% commitment to teaching and research
(clinical or laboratory).
BRIEF DESCRIPTION
OF THE PROGRAM:
Advanced Laparoscopic surgery
including laparoscopic gastric bypass,
fundoplication, colectomy, splenectomy
and bowel resection. Development of
simulation resident training. Teleconferencing.
Collaboration with NASA surgical development.
Fellowship will have a 50% commitment
to teaching and research( clinical
or laboratory).
RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES:
The VCU Department of Surgery
operates laboratory facilities at the
VCU Medical Center. Complete operating
room facilities are available and all
faculty members have ongoing laboratory
research programs. Laboratory research
includes surgery in microgravity for
space flight and telesurgical research.
Multiple opportunities for clinical
research projects including bariatric
surgery and foregut surgery. Research
