VCU named to first-ever President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

Virginia Commonwealth University recently received the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its outstanding efforts in community engagement.

Although all colleges and universities that make meaningful contributions to community service are invited to apply, only 492 institutions were recognized on the inaugural Honor Roll in 2006. In Virginia, VCU was one of 10 named.

Led by the Corporation for National and Community Service and the U.S. departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development, this program was established in response to President George W. Bush’s national call to service. Goals include increasing public awareness of the service contributions of colleges and students to their communities and the nation; identifying and promoting exemplary programs and practices; building on the role of service-learning in higher education; and increasing the number of college students engaged in community service.

For VCU, this distinction recognizes the university’s existing culture of service and opens doors for additional resources to establish and support new and ongoing activities.
