About
the Institute
At the Institute for Drug and Alcohol Studies, we seek to explore
the complex problems of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs through
a multidisciplinary program of research and training. To carry out
this mission, we have established the following six goals:
1. To advance multidisciplinary research and scholarship on alcohol,
tobacco and other drug problems.
2. To facilitate the application of new knowledge to the development
of effective prevention, treatment and policy interventions.
3. To promote the adoption of evidence-based practices, including
research on effective methods of disseminating treatment and prevention
programs.
4. To work with community-based programs to ensure that federal
and private resources are attracted to the commonwealth of Virginia
for innovative treatment and prevention programs.
5. To ensure that students and trainees at VCU receive the highest
quality training based on the latest advancements in substance abuse
research.
6. To develop outreach programs to bring the resources of the Institute
to communities throughout the commonwealth.
