The faculty and staff of the College of Humanities and Sciences are dedicated to excellence in our teaching, research, and public service. The mission of Virginia Commonwealth University provides the framework for our pursuit of excellence.

Teaching and learning are central to the College, and the College is central to the educational and intellectual life of VCU. The College meets the educational needs of a diverse student body, provides general education for all undergraduate students of the university, preparatory programs for the health sciences, engineering, and law, and education in the liberal arts and sciences for future teachers. We offer comprehensive undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs of study, which link a foundation of understanding and knowledge with skills on which students can build careers, become responsible citizens and continue lifelong learning.

Scholarship, creative work and professional accomplishment are essential to teaching and learning. We are responsible for advancing understanding and increasing knowledge for its own sake, for the educational benefit of our students, and for the good of the larger community.

In both teaching and research, the College of Humanities and Sciences takes seriously the responsibilities of being part of a public, urban university. Through service and public teaching, we meet the challenges and opportunities afforded by our metropolitan environment and by our location in the capitol of the commonwealth.

The College achieves national and international recognition through the success of its students, through the advancement of the disciplines and professions represented by its programs, and through the individual and collaborative research of its faculty.
