In addition to its signature program for VCU leaders, the Institute also custom designs and conducts intensive leadership development programs for specific professional groups as well as for particular organizations. Typically, Institute programs are conducted over at least a six-month time period and contain a number of sessions. All programs emphasize the leadership principles of the Institute while also advancing participants’ expertise in their professional content area (e.g., higher education, municipal government, or the nonprofit sector). Instruction is augmented by outside speakers with expertise in particular topic areas. An intensive leadership assessment (i.e., 360-degree feedback) component is often a part of Institute programs. Staff and faculty strive to make the programs especially memorable by their:

attention to the whole person — an acknowledgment of both
the personal and professional aspects of true leadership.

time for reflection, stillness and self-awareness in the midst
of busy lives.

continuous deepening of integrity.
blending fiscal responsibility with a touch of elegance in event planning.
appreciation of how individuality contributes to a cohesive whole.
celebration of people’s native strengths.
facilitation of strong connections among those associated
with the Institute.
