Introduction
The residency program in Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery of Virginia Commonwealth University provides comprehensive training in the medical and surgical care of patients with diseases affecting the ears, upper respiratory and aerodigesitve tracts, and related structures of the head and neck. We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our graduates, who have gone on to subspecialty fellowship training, academic careers, or thriving clinical practices. All of our graduates have passed the Certification Examination of the American Board of Otolaryngology. At our most recent accreditation review by the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Otolaryngology, our program received the highest accreditation period, 5 years.
To accomplish our educational goals, the program provides structured clinical experience in the operating room, inpatient, and outpatient settings, didactic instruction, and research training to cover the entire scope of the specialty of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. The program is five years long including the PGY-1 year (see Program Overview). There are two positions available per year, filled through the
National Resident
Matching Program (see Application and Interview Process ).
The program is centered at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center (VCUMC) in downtown Richmond . This is a busy level I trauma center with over 700 beds, 30 operating rooms between the main and ambulatory operating rooms, and over 80,000 emergency visits per year. The Department of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery outpatient facilities and academic offices are located in the AD Williams Building, immediately adjacent to the main hospital. The Department also has outpatient facilities and operates at the Stony Point Surgical Center (formerly Richmond Eye & Ear Hospital ), located in a suburban setting ten miles west of VCUMC.
Twelve months during the program are spent at the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veteran's Administration Medical Center (HHMMC), located less than 10 miles south of VCUMC. This time is split between the PGY-2, 3, and 5 years. The HHMMC has over 400 acute care beds, and is a tertiary care referral center for oncology, open-heart surgery, spinal cord injury, and heart, lung, and liver transplantation for the Mid-Atlantic region. The Division of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery at HHMMC has a fully equipped outpatient clinic, and operates 2 days per week.
