Dr. Aristides Sismanis was born and raised in Athens , Greece . He attended the Medical School of the University of Athens and upon completing his studies in 1973, he immigrated to the US . After finishing his residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the Long College Hospital of Downstate University in Brooklyn , New York , he had a fellowship in Head and Neck Surgery at Boston University , followed by fellowship in Otology-Neurotology with The Otology Group in Nashville , Tennessee . He joined the department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the Virginia Commonwealth University in 1980 and currently holds the position of Professor and Chairman of the same department.

Dr. Sismanis limits his practice in the field of Otology-Neurotology. His areas of surgical expertise include surgery of skull base (Acoustic Neuromas, Glomus Tumors), surgery of the facial nerve, surgery of the middle ear and mastoid, and cochlear implantation. He also evaluates and treats patients with vestibular problems such as Meniere's disease and positional vertigo, as well as patients with hearing loss and tinnitus. His research interest is focused in cochlear implantation, tinnitus and autoimmune ear disorders.

He has been an invited speaker to numerous national and international meetings and courses, is a member of many senior societies including the American Triologic Society, American Neurotology Society and the American Otological Society and serves in the editorial board of 3 otola

ryngologic Journals. He is the recipient of the 2000 Service award of the American Neurotology Society, as well as the 2003 and 2004 outstanding teacher award, of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.

Between the years 1995 and 1996 he served as the president and chairman of the board of the Virginia Society of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery.

Dr Sismanis has authored or co-authored 81 publications, and 12 book chapters.
