In 1966, Dr. King completed his Bachelor of Science Degree at Central State University in Edmond , Oklahoma and in 1969 earned his Master of Science Degree at Phillips University , in Enid , Oklahoma , majoring in Speech/Language Pathology. He completed his doctoral training at the University of Oklahoma in 1976. He joined the faculty of the Department of Otolaryngology / Head and Neck Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in 1979, as an Assistant Professor. In 1985 he was promoted to Associate Professor.
Dr. King is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Speech/Language Pathologist. He holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech/Language Hearing Association and has been granted Allied Health Staff Membership and scope of practice privileges in the Department of Otolaryngology at the VCUHC Hospital . He served three years as a reviewer for the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He also served two years on the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Health Professions and eight years on the Commonwealth of Virginia Licensure Board of Audiology and Speech/Language Pathology.
Dr. King has offered seminars and lectures throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and nationwide on such subjects as post-laryngectomy speech rehabilitation, swallowing disorders using Flexible Endoscopic Examination Studies (FEES) and the evaluating and treating of dysphonia.. He was one of the first professionals in the region to utilize videoendoscopic and videostroboscopic procedures with individuals with voice problems.
Dr. King has clinical training and experience in the diagnosing and treating of all types of voice problems, swallowing problems related to the oral and pharyngeal phases of swallowing and has successfully evaluated and treated hundreds of adults and children referred for breathing problems associated with Vocal Cord Dysfunction (VCD).
