ANDREW J. HELLER, MD

A New Jersey native, Dr. Heller attended Lafayette College, where he received his undergraduate degree in psychobiology, and received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1995. He completed his residency in Otolaryngology / Head and Neck Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. Dr. Heller joined the VCU Health System faculty in 2001 as an assistant professor. In addition to serving as the coordinator of the Center for Voice and Swallowing disorders and the director of the Division of Otolaryngic Allergy within the department at VCU, Dr. Heller is also the Chief of the Division of Otolaryngology at the McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Board certified in Otolaryngology / Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Heller is also a fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy. He is a member of such noteworthy societies as the American academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy, and the American Medical Association. He has lectured on various otolaryngologic issues throughout the country, including discussions of voice disorders, sinus disease, and allergies.

Dr. Heller's early research has focused on new medications for the treatment of head and neck carcinoma. He is the recipient of several grants in support of his research, including funding from the Massey Cancer Center and the Richmond Eye and Ear Foundation. He has been published in many professional journals, including the Otolaryngologic Clinics of North America, Hearing Research, the American Journal of Otolaryngology, and the ENT Journal. Dr. Heller currently serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Trauma, Injury, Infection, and Critical Care. He is an examiner for the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy. Within the VCU community, Dr. Heller is an elected member of the Faculty Senate and is the course director for the medical school's class in otolaryngology.

Dr. Heller has special clinical interest in the area of voice and swallowing disorders, as well as the area of allergic disease. His current projects include investigating the link between allergies and voice disorders, the incidence of food sensitivities in allergic patients, and the link between chronic fatigue and allergic disease. He is also working towards new methods in office endoscopic examination, minimizing the use of general anesthesia and its associated risks.
