Mission statement
The University Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues is a collaborative and advisory body representing the concerns of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community of Virginia Commonwealth University. The committee serves to advance the university’s commitment to diversity and equal opportunity. The committee envisions a learning environment where lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals are integrated into the intellectual life and social fabric of the university, have equal access to resources and services, and receive equitable treatment as members of the university community.
LGBT goals and objectives
As a collaborative body we will:
- work with existing resources in the VCU community regarding issues of homophobia, heterosexism, discrimination and harassment to dispel the myths and stereotypes upon which prejudices are built.
- regularly meet/network with other VCU committees including AA/504, faculty senate, university council and other relevant groups.
- establish relationships with other groups, organizations, departments and universities outside the VCU campus.
As an advisory body we will:
- review relevant policies and procedures and offer comment to decision-makers on the potential impact and consequences they may have on the University Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues community.
- make recommendations to decision-makers for policy and services related to the diverse needs of LGBT individuals.
- periodically survey VCU’s faculty, staff and students to assess the climate of the learning environment for VCU’s LGBT students and to learn more about the attitudes on campus regarding sexual orientation.
- make recommendations to decision-makers on how to reduce the incidence of homophobia and improve the quality of life for LGBT individuals on the Monroe Park Campus and MCV Campus.
- serve as a contact point for those seeking information and opinion.
- meet and report annually to both the provost and director of Equal Employment Office and Affirmative Action Services the activities of the committee and recommendations for university action.
As an advocacy body we will:
- sponsor, promote and produce events that foster increased awareness of diversity and pluralism, and recognize contributions of faculty, staff, students and alumni.
- strategically utilize university news media, Web pages and other means of mass communication to engender increased awareness of diversity and pluralism, including LGBT issues.
- identify and address curricular issues to include development of courses and course components relating to diversity and pluralism.
- encourage and recognize scholarly and creative activities by, for and about LGBT individuals.
