HEALTH AND HUMAN PERFORMANCE
Effective following approval of the Board of Visitors in May 2006, the Departments of Exercise Science and Teacher Education in Health and Physical Education will merge into one department, the Department of Health and Human Performance.
The Department of Health and Human Performance offers undergraduate programs leading to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health, Physical Education and Exercise Science. Students choose one of the following concentrations.
- The Exercise Science Concentration prepares students to service as leaders of fitness, health and conditional programs in corporate, commercial, university, and clinical settings that provide exercise programming for apparently healthy individuals and those with chronic disease.
- The Community Health Education concentration prepares professionals for health related careers in private, public, medical and corporate sectors to facilitate developing healthy communities
- The Teacher Education in Health and Physical Education concentration prepares professionals to teach health and physical education at the elementary, middle and high school levels
Along with the 4 undergraduate programs, the Department also offers a Master of Science Degree in Health and Movement Sciences and Doctor of Philosophy in Rehabilitation and Movement Science. The MS in HEMS is a graduate program which provides advanced course work for students interested in the application of health and movement science principles to exercise science, teaching and sports medicine. This degree program has a central focus on the sciences and is flexible enough so that students, with the assistance of an advisor, can design a program that truly meets their professional goals. The HEMS program is also an excellent progression of study for those students that teach in the health and physical education field.
The M.S.A.T. program will apply for accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) in September 2007 with an expected program evaluation in the spring semester of 2008. Application for CAATE accreditation does not guarantee accreditation, and if accreditation is not awarded to the M.S.A.T. program following their anticipated site visit, students enrolled in the program will not be eligible to register with the Board of Certification and take the certifying examination.
