Developing a Teaching Philosophy

This workshop can be viewed as a stand alone workshop, or the first of three in a series--creating a Learning-Centered Syllabus and Developing a Teaching Portfolio. This workshop requires faculty to bring with them a draft of an existing teaching philosophy and a syllabus. During the workshop faculty will identify the functions of a teaching philosophy, exchange teaching philosophies for review and will be asked to identify central themes or messages conveyed by the teaching philosophy. The authors will then be asked to reconcile whether the messages were intended or not. During the second half of the workshop, faculty will exchange syllabi in order to determine if the “messages” in the syllabi are consistent with the teaching philosophy.
