Checklist: Effective lecturing

Have you decided...

  • The objectives for this lecture
  • The main points you will make
  • What activities will engage students with the topic
  • How those activities will fit the lecture and class objectives
  • How to introduce and conclude each section
  • How to grab and keep students’ attention
  • How to link old and new information
  • If you will give the students a handout
  • What will be on that handout
  • If you will post that handout to Blackboard (if you decide to use Blackboard)
  • How you will check for understanding
  • If/what technology you will use
  • How that technology will fit the lecture and class objectives

Have you prepared….

  • The introduction, body, and conclusion of the lecture
  • Your outline
  • A handout (if you use one)
  • Audiovisuals, including your technology needs
  • Any follow up activities, such as on-line discussion questions
