Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
As one of our strategic goals for the foreseeable future, the CTE endeavors to promote support, and engage in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). The term "scholarship of teaching" comes from the work of Ernest Boyer in the early 1990s--specifically his monograph entitled "Scholarship Reconsidered." Lately, SoTL has been a primary focus for the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning under the stewardship of the current president, Lee Shulman. In general, SoTL involves researching what we do in the classroom with the same vigor and scientific inquiry as we do our research in general. The purpose of which is to (1) improve how we teach in order to enhance student learning and (2) to make public our findings for peer review and for the welfare of other faculty and faculty developers.
The purpose of this web-page is to provide a central location for publishing outlets, funding opportunities and professional conferences on teaching and learning. Although we do not provide an exhaustive list in each of these areas, we have tried to provide a representative sample of some of the more reputable venues for the purpose of raising awareness about SoTL at VCU and to facilitate the pursuit of SoTL projects by VCU faculty.
- Academic Exchange Quarterly
Academic Exchange Quarterly, begun ten years ago as a traditional publishing print-format journal with key editors from the same college, will celebrate its 10th anniversary in Fall 2007. Currently, articles from Academic Exchange Quarterly are available in four formats: print, online, digital, and HTML version. Due to this journal's virtual organizational structure, AEQ editors and authors come from all fifty states and forty-four foreign countries.
- Academic Intersections
Academic Intersections is an online peer-reviewed journal publishing accounts of research or creative works within or across academic disciplines, courses and curricula or programs that embrace multiple media as a fundamental aspect of higher education in the 21st century. The journal's purpose is to provide a media rich venue for exploring the new knowledge emerging from the integration of technology, scholarly and creative works, and the scholarship of teaching and learning in higher education.
- Active Learning in Higher Education
Active Learning in Higher Education is an international, refereed publication for all those who teach and support learning in Higher Education and those who undertake or use research into effective learning, teaching and assessment in universities and colleges. The journal has an objective of improving the status of teaching and learning support as professional activity and embraces academic practice across all curriculum areas in higher education.
- College Teaching
College Teaching, a unique, cross-disciplinary journal, focuses on how teachers can improve student learning. Each issue includes practical ideas and new strategies for successful teaching. Both new and veteran faculty appreciate the scope of CT’s rigorously refereed articles on classroom research, student assessment, diversity, student-centered instruction, and accountability within the academy.
- Innovative Higher Education
Innovative Higher Education, now in its 33rd year of publication, is a refereed scholarly journal with a distinguished and internationally known editorial review board. Its editorial goals are: To present descriptions and evaluations of innovations and provocative new ideas with relevance for action beyond the immediate context in higher education; focus on the effect of such innovations on teaching and students; be open to diverse forms of scholarship and research methods by maintaining flexibility in the selection of topics deemed appropriate for the journal; and strike a balance between practice and theory by presenting manuscripts in a readable and scholarly manner to both faculty and administrators in the academic community.
- The Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-based Learning
The Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-based Learning (IJPBL) publishes relevant, interesting, and challenging articles of research, analysis, or promising practice related to all aspects of implementing problem-based learning (PBL) in K–12 and post-secondary classrooms.
- International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning is an open, peer-reviewed, international electronic journal published twice a year by the Center for Excellence in Teaching at Georgia Southern University to be an international vehicle for articles, essays, and discussions about the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and its applications in higher/tertiary education today.
- The International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
The International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education provides a forum for higher education faculty, staff, administrators, researchers, and students who are interested in improving post-secondary instruction. The IJTLHE provides broad coverage of higher education pedagogy and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) across diverse content areas, educational institutions, and levels of instructional expertise. The specific emphasis of IJTLHE is the dissemination of knowledge for improving higher education pedagogy. Electronic distribution of IJTLHE maximizes global availability.
- Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
Founded in 2001, the Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (JoSoTL) is a forum for the dissemination of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in higher education for the community of teacher-scholars. Our peer reviewed Journal promotes SoTL investigations that are theory-based and supported by evidence. JoSoTL’s objective is to publish articles that promote effective practices in teaching and learning and add to the knowledge base.
MountainRise is an open, peer-reviewed, international electronic journal published twice a year by the Coulter Faculty Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning at Western Carolina University for the purpose of being an international vehicle for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL).
- Journal on Excellence in College Teaching
The Journal on Excellence in College Teaching (ISSN 1052-4800) is a peer-reviewed journal published at Miami University by and for faculty at universities and two- and four-year colleges to increase student learning through effective teaching, interest in and enthusiasm for the profession of teaching, and communication among faculty about their classroom experiences. It answers Ernest Boyer's (1990) call for a forum to present the scholarship of teaching and learning. The Journal provides a scholarly, written forum for discussion by faculty about all areas affecting teaching and learning, and gives faculty the opportunity to share proven, innovative pedagogies and thoughtful, inspirational insights about teaching.
