The purpose of this FLC, sponsored by a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) grant, is to bring System Biology to the undergraduate classroom. This focus on undergraduate education in Systems Biology is to better prepare students for careers in the life sciences.
The first faculty learning community related to the HHMI grant was established in the fall of 2006. It had two purposes: 1) to create an Honors Section of Biology 152, Spring 2007, that was an Introduction to Systems Biology and 2) to create a general section of Biology 152, Fall 2007, that was taught using a Systems Thinking format. The FLC continues to redesign Biology 151 and 152 to include Systems Thinking and assess its success.
