Redefining Literacy for the 21st Century - Goals

Goal 1:

Develop a learning community by engaging in an FLC that explores how the definition of “literacy” is evolving in a digital age.

  • Objective 1: Attendance: Community members are expected to attend each session and to regularly contribute to the physical and online discussions and activities.
  • Objective 2: Participation: Community members are expected to participate in a variety of collaborative activities: e.g., discussion, problem solving and online exchanges.
  • Objective 3: Contribution: Community members are expected to contribute to the identification of resources, and the generation of topics and key questions that will guide the work of the community.
  • Objective 4: Sharing: Community members are expected to share their FLC experience with colleagues at VCU and other universities. Community members are strongly encouraged to present their work at local, regional, or national conferences and to actively seek avenues for publishing their scholarly work on digital literacy.

Goal 2:

Through shared community experiences, participants will explore and discuss the current literature regarding 21st Century literacy issues in teaching and learning.

  • Objective 1: Community members will access current literature on 21st Century skills, digital literacy, and Web 2.0 applications. Essential questions will revolve around identifying the technology skills that faculty and students will need in the 21st Century.
  • Objective 2: Community members will share their findings with each other and their department colleagues.
  • Objective 3: Community members will explore how the findings from the literature impact their own beliefs about the nature of learning, the role of the student, and the role of the instructor.

Goal 3:

Using the community as a resource, each participant will engage in an individual project that explores 21st Century literacy issues in teaching and learning.

  • Objective 1: Community members will discuss how findings from the current literature could impact course design. How is learning affected? How is communication and connections affected? How do students evaluate digital knowledge? What ethical and safety issues arise?
  • Objective 2: Community members will redesign one of their courses to incorporate findings from the current literature.
  • Objective 3: Community members will create an assessment plan to determine the outcomes of their course redesign.
  • Objective 4: Community members will launch their redesigned class and evaluate the results.

Goal 4:

Through shared community experiences, participants will engage in a collective project that explores 21st Century literacy issues in teaching and learning.

  • Objective 1: Community members will engage in a collaborative project that produces information and knowledge that can support changed practices that would enhance student learning.

Goal 5:

Maximize the potential for disseminating the information on 21st Century literacy throughout VCU via a coordinated and strategic implementation effort.

  • Objective 1: Community members will explore various assessment methods for both the individual and group projects.
  • Objective 2: Community members will devise and carry out the assessment plans.
  • Objective 3: Community members will discuss mechanisms by which the findings on 21st Century literacy can be introduced to the VCU community.
  • Objective 4: Community members will examine opportunities to disseminate the findings of the assessment nationally or internationally.
