Dr. Joseph Marolla is the Vice Provost for Instruction at VCU. Currently reporting to him are the University College, Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE), University Honors Program, and the Office Of Assessment. Dr. Marolla is also the coordinator of the Quality Enhancement Plan for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
Arriving in 1975 as an assistant professor of Sociology, Dr. Marolla has been at VCU for 30 years. He became chairperson of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology in 1992, holding that position for nine years.
In 2001, Dr. Marolla was charged with creating the Center for Teaching Excellence. The CTE is now a thriving part of the university with six full-time staff members and three assistants. The CTE runs programs in faculty development, as well as delivering individualized attention to faculty seeking consultation and resources for redesigning their courses. This work has led to the development of four active Faculty learning communities with over eighty members and has provided faculty workshops with nationally and internationally renouned leaders in the field of teaching and learning.
Currently, Dr. Marolla is working with a number of faculty groups to reform general education to chart the course for a learning-centered research university. This project is mandated by the university’s recently adopted strategic plan (VCU 2020). The plan directs the university to develop a more “learning-centered” environment for the students and faculty, as well as a more engaging climate inside and outside of the classroom.
