Thursday, July 7, 2005 * 3:00-4:30pm
NIH Clinical Center (Building 10) Medical Board Room (Room 2C116)
BCIG BRAINSTORMING SESSION:
"BCIG's Successes with Multidisciplinary Biomedical Data Mining"
Jim DeLeo, NIH Clinical Center
Description:
For the last year, BCIG has been experimenting with a multidisciplinary team approach to biomedical data mining. This work is slowly being recognized NIH wide. This recognition has led to an invitation for us to do a two-hour symposium at the October 2005 NIH Research Festival. Four different BCIG-related biomedical data mining projects will be described at this symposium (See attachment for details.) Although we are off to a good start, team biomedical data mining is still at its infancy at the NIH. There are many problems in making it truly mainstream. For example, resources, data access, data ownership and data privacy issues, effectively addressing diverse motivations of team members, publication issues, intellectual property issues, learning to work together effectively in teams, and developing the new kind of team leadership required. At this BCIG Brainstorming, an overview of BCIG's successful data mining projects will be given, and then we will discuss the problems that seem to be impeding more rapid progress and see if we can gain some useful breakthrough insights through a friendly cooperative group dialogue.
Facilitator
Jim DeLeo has been a computer scientist at the NIH for over 30 years. He is currently Chief of the Scientific Computing Section in the Department of Clinical Research Informatics in the NIH Clinical Center. Jim is highly motivated to understand and transcend the bottlenecks that create the "chasm" that causes delays in getting computational methodology from the innovation stage to meaningful and useful real world implementation, particularly as the chasm problem applies to medicine (e.g. the "bench to bedside" chasm.)
