The Center for the Study of Biological Complexity is proud to welcome Dr. Don Mikulecky to the Trani Life Sciences Center on Tuesday, February 4 at 2:00 p.m. in Room 253.

The study of complex systems is a large part of Dr. Mikulecky's teaching efforts. To date they have created a web page devoted to this topic which includes interactive discussions and archives, as well as a multitude of links to other sources. Included is a list of people here at VCU and around the world who have something to contribute to the study of complex systems.

There is also his disciplinary teaching which involves human physiology at a number of levels as well as related areas of math, physics, and physical chemistry.

He is an international authority on the subject of complexity and an author of several papers and a book. He will be lecturing on the basic aspects of complexity.
This is an important activity of the Center, bringing to the members a unifying view of complex systems, emergence, self-organization, and the significance of this paradigm.


Dr. Mikulecky has posted his talk on his website, where you may also download a powerpoint version.

ABSTRACT:
RELIGION IS BASED ON BELIEFS, SCIENCE IS (SUPPOSED TO BE) BASED ON FACTS!

Since Charles Darwin's (and Wallace's) introduction of the forces that have molded organisms through time, there have been changes in the definitions and in our perceptions of certain words. However some of our current definitions" (notably evolution and natural selection) have reached the point of becoming tautologies and hence rely more on semantics than on science. This has had the unfortunate effect of narrowing the scope and importance of many areas of scientific inquiry. My talk will use examples from my own research over the past quarter of a century coupled with work by others that demonstrate the flaws in the reductionist view of life and the challenges of working on complex systems in a chaotic world. I will argue that these problems are reflected in our inability to make accurate predictions based on historical records and illogical "panglossian" explanations. I will also argue that if Darwin were alive today, he would not agree with how "his" theory has "evolved".
