Biological Complexity

Although the new field of Genomics has been extremely successful at providing a comprehensive parts list for many kinds of microbial, plant and animal cells, biologists still remain very far from an understanding of how those parts, when put together, interact to produce what is known as `life.’ We do appreciate that the complex patterns of biological behavior referred to as ‘life’ only emerge when all of these component parts interact in just the right way. Research to understand how those components work together to create the emergent processes of life is the study of “Biological Complexity.”
