for the Study of Biological Complexity at Virginia Commonwealth University • Amersham Ettan IPGphor IEF System. This is an apparatus used to separate proteins on the basis of their isoelectric points. An isoelectric point of a protein (a measure of its relative contents of acidic and basic amino acid residues) is the pH at which its net charge is zero. Isoelectric focusing unit is used for first dimension electrophoresis. • Amersham Ettan DALTsix ELECTROPHORESIS UNIT. This is an apparatus used to separate proteins on the basis of mass by electrophoresis in a polyacrylamide gel under denaturing conditions. • Genetix GelPix Protein Spot Excision Robot. GelPix is a high-throughput protein spot excision system designed to accurately image, analyze and excise silver, Coomassie and Sypro Ruby stained protein spots from self and pre-cast 2D gels. • Packard MultiPROBE II®
HT EX Liquid Handling System. In conjunction with PerkinElmer’s
GripperTM Integration Platform, 192 MALDI Spotting Kit, Proteomics Accessory
Kit, and Millipore’s Montáge™ In-Gel DigestZP Kit,
Packard MultiPROBE II® HT EX Liquid Handling System is
used for automated In-Gel digestion (loading gel plug, destaining, Alkylation,
In-Gel digest and extraction) of protein bands that have been excised
from 2D gels. In the months preceding the above procurements, several
new mass spectrometry and HPLC instrumentation, including a Waters®
Alliance HT HPLC: 2795 XE Separations Module, have been added, and more
additions are planned in the coming months.
