Regional Economic Outlook

Employment Forecast
The following graph shows that the number of nonfarm employees in the Richmond MSA’s was nearly 570,000 in 2003. Using a sophisticated Bayesian Vector Autoregressive model to forecast employment, we expect the number of workers will increase by 1.2% to 1.8% in 2004. These graphs were prepared by VCUD's own econometrician Howard Sanderson.

Leading and Coincident Indicators
The coincident index is a combination of economic data series that are used to measure current economic activity. The leading index is made up of economic data series that provide a prediction of economic activity six to nine months in the future.
By following upward and downward trends of the leading index, we can offer a forecast of the coincident index and hence the outlook of the Richmond MSA economy.
