National Child Passenger Safety Certification Training Program

The TSTC at VCU is pleased to offer the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration National Child Passenger Safety Certification Training Program.

The 32-hour course is taught through a combination of lectures, role playing and hands-on practice with child safety seats and vehicle belt systems. Students should be prepared for the substantial physical activity needed to install safety seats. They will take both written and hands-on tests, and participate in a “real-world” CPS child safety seat checkpoint.

Prospective students should have a keen interest in promoting child passenger safety and be available to serve as a CPS resource person for their organization. Participating in this program will enhance your organization’s credibility in traffic safety. Properly restraining children and adults saves lives and reduces injuries. The combination of instruction, demonstration, skill development and testing will lead to national certification as a CPS technician.

Registration is open to persons engaged in public safety, health care or social services.

How to register

Since Jan. 1, 2004, the National SAFE KIDS Campaign has been the certifying body for the National Child Passenger Safety Certification Training Program (formerly titled National Standardized Child Passenger Safety Training Program). Registration will be available online or by phone. There is a $60 fee to cover the training manual, a two-year certification and periodic updates.

Fee payment may be made by check, credit card or purchase order.

To register, visit www.usa.safekids.org. Click on “CPS certification” and then click on “find a course.” When searching for TSTC training courses, click on the box “invitation only/controlled course.” This is on the page listing the states where training is available. At this point, the name of the student will be entered and a user ID and password will be generated. Supervisors and secretaries attempting to enter the system should avoid using their own name unless they plan to attend the training.

If online service is not available, call (877) 366-8154 to register.

The TSTC does not charge a fee for this training, nor do we receive any portion of the registration fee. Transportation, lodging and meals are the responsibility of the student. Classes are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. each day unless otherwise noted. Each student is expected to furnish a passenger vehicle to be used in the training exercises. You must attend all sessions.

For additional information, call the TSTC at (804) 828-6235 or e-mail Zeb Saunders.
