The program

Research and training opportunities

The Ph.D. program is committed to providing an intellectually vibrant atmosphere for study and scholarship. All students are encouraged to pursue opportunities for additional research and training while completing their studies for the Ph.D. degree. Those interested in pursuing an academic career after graduation are strongly encouraged to gain additional research and teaching experience

Research opportunities

The Center for Public Policy has a number of opportunities for graduate students to get involved in research and policy analysis. The center provides professional and leadership training, survey design and implementation, economic research, transportation safety planning and educational policy analysis.

Our divisions include:

The faculty affiliated with the Ph.D. program are actively engaged in research and scholarship; many faculty include graduate students in conducting and publishing results from those research projects.

Teaching opportunities and training

The university has a number of resources to help graduate students learn how to become effective teachers. The Preparing Future Faculty Program, in partnership with the university’s Center for Teaching Excellence, offers a series of short courses and professional development opportunities for graduate students interested in pursuing careers in higher education. The program offers access to resources and activities of the Center for Teaching Excellence and service-learning experiences through the Division of Community Engagement while providing networking opportunities with students and faculty from a wide range of disciplines, as well as discipline-specific areas of study.
Students with graduate student fellowships often work as teaching assistants for undergraduate classes taught in the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs. Advanced graduate students are sometimes able to teach as adjunct instructors.

Internship training

The Wilder School offers one of the most dynamic internship programs in the commonwealth of Virginia. Wilder Scholars Fellowships place students in a year-long internship in any of dozens of governmental departments and agencies, legislative offices, political campaigns, non-profit institutions or businesses.
