President’s Office

February 5, 2009

 A meeting of the University Council was held on Thursday, February 5, 2009, at 3 p.m. in the Founders Room, located on the second floor of the Siegel Center at 1200 West Broad Street.

The following members and alternates were present:

Dr. Trani welcomed Council members. The minutes of the December 4, 2008, University Council meeting were approved.

The Proposal to Create a Division of Hand Surgery in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, School of Medicine was presented. Drs. Sarrett and Adelaar discussed highlights of the proposal and responded to questions. On motion made and seconded, the Proposal to Create a Division of Hand Surgery in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, School of Medicine was approved.

The VCU Code of Ethics was presented via a power point presentation. Dr. Trani discussed highlights of the process and Dr. Gottfredson discussed VCU values. Mr. Bunce focused on the university and VCU Health System environment. Ms. Bishop discussed the purpose of the VCU Code of Ethics and the role of the VCU faculty/staff ombudsperson. A general discussion followed with Drs. Trani and Gottfredson, Mr. Bunce and Ms. Bishop responding to questions

The Report of the President was presented. Dr. Trani discussed the budget and legislative session. VCU’s budget amendment requests include funding for: 1) utility increases; 2) a general classroom building (located at the site of the VV lot); 3) operating support for three new buildings (Engineering/Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Perkinson Dental Building). A general discussion followed with Dr. Trani responding to questions.

Dr. Trani discussed the recent arrest of VCU’s Police Chief, Willie Fuller. Drs. Trani and Gottfredson also discussed the background of Chief Fuller’s degree situation in response to a Times-Dispatch article. A general discussion followed with Dr. Trani responding to questions.

Searches underway include: 1) Dean of the School of Business; 2) Dean of the College of Humanities & Sciences; 3) Dean of the School of Social Work; 4) Dean of University College; and 5) Director of the Wilder School.

A Capital Construction Update was presented. Dr. Trani discussed capital construction, to include: 1) the recent acquisition of property located at the site of the former Ukrop’s at the corner of West Grace and Harrison Streets; 2) lot at the site of the old Richmond Eye & Ear Hospital; 3) new Engineering Building; 4) Medical Sciences II (scheduled to move in by April 2009); 5) Perkinson Dental Building (scheduled for completion by June 2009); 6) Monroe Park Campus and MCV Campus recreational facilities; and 7) new School of Medicine on the A.D. Williams side (architect has been selected). A general discussion followed with Dr. Trani responding to questions.
