The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology offers programs leading to MS, PhD, and MD/PhD degrees, preparing students for
careers in academia, government, biotechnology, and teaching. At the core of each degree program is an
independent research project that is conducted under the supervision of a faculty member. Student research
projects can be developed in various areas, including structural biology, eukaryotic molecular biology,
cellular and molecular signaling, molecular genetics, enzymology, tumor biology, and bioinformatics. Close
ties with other departments in the School of Medicine and the School of Dentistry further expand the scope of
research activities that are available to Biochemistry & Molecular Biology graduate students.
In addition to the research degrees, the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology also offers a Pre-Medical Basic Health
Sciences Certificate Program. The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program in Biochemistry& Molecular Biology provides graduate
training in the life sciences for qualified students without the necessity of completing a research project
and writing a thesis. In the Certificate Program, students take one year (two semesters, 27 credits) of
graduate level courses in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, and other disciplines. Most
students complete the Certificate Program in order to improve their academic qualifications for application
to medical or dental school. However, some students view this program as an introduction to graduate
education in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and use it as a stepping-stone into the MS or PhD programs.
