Research Groups

The members of the Tissue Repair Group, Drs. Sato-Bigbee, Diegelmann, Zehner, Beckmann, and Ratz, are studying how a variety of tissues respond to injury. Among these are smooth and cardiac muscle, bone, and brain tissues. The members of this group have expertise in signal transduction, the regulation of gene expression, and the biology of the extracellular matrix. The studies of this group are intended to better understand the endogenous healing processes of the body in hopes that these can be harnessed to promote more efficient and substantial wound healing in clinical settings.

Robert Diegelmann, Professor: Regulation of collagen deposition following tissue injury.
  Carmen Sato-Bigbee, Associate Professor

Regulatory pathways and mechanisms of gene regulation during brain development and regeneration, molecular mechanisms involved in oligodendrocyte development and myelination.
  Matt Beckman, Assistant Professor:

Tissue engineering approaches to diseases of bone, cartilage and connective tissue; Regulation of osteoclastogenesis by steroid mediators, matrix proteins, cytokines and growth factors.
  Paul Ratz, Professor:

Regulation of contraction of vascular and bladder smooth muscles.
  Zendra Zehner, Professor:

Regulation of gene expression in fibroblasts, macrophages and endothelial cells; Mechanisms of transcriptional repression; Nuclear export and localization of cytoskeletal mRNAs.
  Sarah Spiegel, Professor:

Role of sphingosine-1-phosphate in tissue repair and smooth muscle cell contraction and migration.
  Frank Fang, Assistant Professor:

The regulation of phospholipid synthesis, metabolism and signaling in acute and chronic wound healing.
  William Barton, Assistant Professor:

Regulation of angiogenesis during wound repair by the Angiopoietin-Tie2 receptor-ligand system.
