Research Groups

The members of the Structural Biology Group, Drs. Wright, Peterson, Bell, Barton, and Scarsdale, are using biophysical approaches to study the functioning and regulation of proteins, RNA-protein complexes, lipids, and lipoproteins. They are using X-ray crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), cryoelectronmicroscopy, calorimetry, and circular dichroism (CD) to uncover the molecular mechanisms that underlie atherosclerosis, viral hepatitis, Alzheimer’s disease, and other disorders.

  Darrell Peterson, Professor:

Structure and function of proteins of hepadnaviruses and hepatitis C virus.
  J. Neel Scarsdale, Assistant Professor:

X-ray crystallography, protein engineering, protein folding and structures of serpins and their roles in Alzheimer’s disease
  H. Tonie Wright, Professor:

X-ray crystallography, protein engineering, structures of serpins and their roles in alzheimer’s disease, enzymes of fatty acid biosynthesis, RNA-decapping protein.
  William Barton, Assistant Professor:

X-ray crystallography of extracellular receptor-ligand complexes and intracellular signaling pathways.
  Jessica Bell, Assistant Professor:

SStructural and biochemical analysis of protein:protein interactions in the signaling cascade of pathogen recognition receptors.
