Gov. Timothy Kaine has named Sarah Spiegel, Ph.D., an internationally renowned researcher and professor and chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, as one of the state’s Outstanding Scientists of 2008 for her discovery of a potent lipid mediator, which she demonstrated to have important roles in cancer, inflammation and allergy.

statistics on research, training, and other awards made to Departments of
Biochemistry by the National Institutes of Health. Our ranking increased
again by 5 places from 37th in 2003. In fiscal year 2004, the Department
received 14 research awards, totaling $5,830,597 and 2 training awards that
garnered another $59,296. Given the recent additions to our faculty, new
collaborations, and the increased size of our graduate program, we
anticipate that the Department will enjoy continued success in the future.

On Saturday, October 30, 2004, dozens of biomedical scientists assembled at the MCV Alumni House to attend two research symposia sponsored by the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. The Second Undergraduate Research Symposium was a forum for the presentation of research projects performed by students enrolled in Virginia colleges and universities and included students from VCU, The University of Richmond, Virginia Union University, and Randolph-Macon College.

The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology was recognized as the VCU department that demonstrated the third highest increase in extramural funding in fiscal year
2002. Dr. Sarah Spiegel, Professor and Chair, accepted the award on behalf of the department at the annual VCU Research Banquet. Dr. Spiegel
attributes the success of the department to our highly motivated faculty and their talented and enthusiastic graduate students and fellows.
