Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Hosts 2nd Undergraduate Research Symposium/ Inaugural SMBL Research
Retreat
On Saturday, October 30, 2004, dozens of biomedical scientists assembled at the MCV Alumni House to
attend two research symposia sponsored by the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. The Second Undergraduate
Research Symposium was a forum for the presentation of research projects performed by students
enrolled in Virginia colleges and universities and included students from VCU, The University of
Richmond, Virginia Union University, and Randolph-Macon College.

The students presented research
posters on a variety of topics, including the enzymology of dehydrogenases, crystal structure of DNA
repair enzymes, design and implementation of lentivirus gene transduction systems, phylogenetic
analysis of mitochondrial DNA, and migration of osteoblast stem cells into model membranes. The
students presented their posters to a diverse audience, consisting of VCU graduate students,
postdoctoral, and faculty as well as faculty and students from the other participating universities.
After a pizza luncheon, the students were awarded certificates to commemorate their participation in
the Symposium. In addition, students were offered tours of the newly renovated laboratories of the
Cellular and Molecular Signaling facility in Sanger Hall.

Students also had the opportunity to view the presentations in the Inaugural Signaling and
Metabolism of Bioactive Lipids (SMBL) Research Retreat. This event (held concurrently with the
Undergraduate Research Symposium) featured poster presentations by pre- and post-doctoral scientists
whose research interests focused on such areas as phospholipases and lipid metabolism, the
regulation of gene expression by lipids and their metabolites, bone and mineral metabolism,
lipoprotein structure and function, the biochemical pathways elicited through interactions between
bioactive lipids and neuronal cells. During the poster session, SMBL participants shared their
data and ideas with fellow researchers from VCU and from the other institutions. They also served
as graduate school “ambassadors”, providing participants in the Undergraduate Research Symposium
with a “student’s perspective” on graduate school.
Many thanks to the students, staff, and faculty who organized and attended these two successful
events!
