The mission of the Department Biochemistry & Molecular Biology falls into two important categories: teaching
and research. We address important research problems and provide high quality
opportunities for our pre-and postdoctoral trainees. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology are the underpinnings of
modern biomedical science and our Department provides this background for all trainees
at VCU, regardless of the direction the future may take them. The Department of
Biochemistry & Molecular Biology prepares students for successful careers as independent investigators in
biomedical sciences and the biotechnology industry. The Department encompasses the 2nd
floor of Sanger Hall on the Medical College of Virginia Campus of Virginia Commonwealth
University and has additional facilities in other parts of the VCU campus. We have an
outstanding faculty of 20 dedicated and enthusiastic regular members, 20 affiliated
members and approximately 50 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. The Department
endeavors to maintain a graduate student-faculty ratio of 2:1. A wide variety of classes
and seminars are offered, and the Departmental resources are enriched through a broad
range of collaborations with adjunct faculty, and close ties with other departments and
the private sector. This provides access to a spectrum of state-of-the-art technology,
thus supporting research in diverse areas. The Department is undergoing a major
expansion beginning in 2002 and with the recruitment of new faculty, has underway
research efforts of international stature in several areas.
Medical College of Virginia Campus - A Center of Excellence
The Medical College of
Virginia was established in 1838 and became an independent institution in 1854. In
1968, the Medical College became a component of Virginia Commonwealth University, and
is presently the largest institution of higher education in Virginia. Approximately
2,500 students are on the MCV campus out of an overall university enrollment of more
than 19,000. The Dept. of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology is a component of the School of Medicine, which
also includes the wSchools of Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Allied Health
Professions. VCU's Medical College of Virginia campus enjoys a location in downtown
Richmond adjacent to the state capitol and Shockoe Slip, the original center of
commercial Richmond, which now houses a variety of restaurants and shops. Richmond is
located along the historic James River and offers a wide variety of cultural
opportunities including museums, art galleries, and concerts. Colonial Williamsburg,
Jamestown, and Yorktown are nearby, and Richmond is only a 2-hour drive from the
Atlantic shore of Virginia Beach, the Scenic Blue Ridge Mountains, and the nation's
capital, Washington D.C. The blend of tradition, ongoing development, temperate
climate, and geographic location provides an attractive environment in which to work
and live. For more information about the city of Richmond click here.
