Playwriting Links on the Web
'That we now find ourselves attacked as immoralists, anarchists, or PC apostles reflects the degree to which we have succeeded in articulating a vision for the future which threatens those who cling to nostalgia. Most important, art is attacked in its own time. We must be doing something right.'
-- David Henry Hwang

Organizations for Playwrights on the Web . . .
Useful & Interesting . . .
- Writers Guild of America: Craft of Writing: An excellent source of tips and interviews on writing for film and television.
- Playwrights' and Screenwriters' Homepage: Helpful tips, advice, and leads from Charles Deemer.
- Muse of Fire Productions: A film production company that tells you what it's looking for in screenplays.
- Intuitions College Theatre Guide: The most comprehensive listing of academic theatre programs on the Web. Some offer playwriting courses.
- Inter-Play: A search tool for finding plays that may only be published in anthologies, magazines, and journals. Also gives Library of Congress catalogue numbers [for U.S.A. libraries].
- Dramatists Play Service, Inc.: An excellent source for ordering many of the plays by U.S. playwrights referred to in The Seminars.
If you're no where near a decent bookstore with a substantial stock of plays -- and they're getting harder to find every year in the US -- Amazon.com, the Web bookstore, is probably your best source for the scripts recommended in The Playwriting Seminars.
- The Internet Theatre Bookshop: If you're outside of North America. And there's also the UK branch of Amazon.com.
- Stage & Screen: A book club offering modestly priced hard-back editions of new plays soon after they have been produced in New York. Given the market, the majority are by American playwrights. And they've added a few screenplays.
- Regional Theatres on the Web: A selection -- from the U.S., Canada, and England -- that are active in new play production.
- Tom Noonan, movie maker: A great site from a playwright who's figured out the independent film business -- and tells you how he does it.
Courses Offered Entirely via the Web & E-mail . . .
[Most of these are taught by folks who've been there.]
Web Magazines & Newsletters . . .
- Writer on Line Newsletter: A fine source of practical articles by the pros on writing plays, novels, and almost everything else. And software if you're in need of gentle prodding to write.
For Writers Under 18 . . .
- Young Playwrights Inc.: YPI was founded by Stephen Sondheim to support playwrights under the age of 18. It runs national play competitions, workshops, and other services for high school students.
