Specialized study in one or more of five material areas:
metal – make objects and jewelry with soldering, stone setting, hollow forming, and enameling techniques
fiber – learn to weave, embroider, and knit, and silkscreen on cloth
wood – study carving, joinery and lathe work to make sculpture and furniture
glass – explore glassblowing, slumping, lampworking, and casting
clay – learn hand building or wheel throwing pottery techniques

There is an emphasis on using materials wisely and skillfully to express ideas through objects and images.

Students interact regularly with top national and international artists, curators, and critics, ranging from emerging craft hipsters to pillars in the art world.

How to Apply to the Department of Craft/Material Studies, BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts)
To be considered for entry in the Craft/Material Studies major as a sophomore, all applicants must complete the freshman year Art Foundation Program. Submit a visual portfolio, recommendation form, and completed VCU application.
