International
Theatre VCU has a strong commitment to International Artistic Study. The department creates opportunities for students to study abroad through the University Office of International Education.

In the summer of 2008, Dr. Tawnya Pettiford-Wates traveled with six VCU students to Johannesburg, South Africa and explored African theatre through performance and cultural festivals. While there, they visited the internationally-award winning Market Theatre.

In 2010, Professor Pettiford-Wates will take a group of students to Durban, South Africa to collaborate with students from the theatre department at KwaZulu-Natal. While in residence, they will create a devised theatre piece that will tour the provinces. She will also collaborate with the creator of the hit Broadway musical Sarafina! Mbongeni Ngema on combining Western and African elements of ritual and poetic drama.

Lighting design and technical students have the opportunity to travel every summer with Lou Szari to Rome, Italy for four weeks to work on lighting two productions at the Opera Festival Di Roma. Performances are staged in the beautiful 15th Century courtyard of S. Ivo alla Sapienza in central Rome and are accompanied by the Orchestra Sinfonica dell'International Chamber Ensemble.

In the summer of 2009, 15 students traveled with Janet Rodgers to Belgrade, Serbia for 10 days to work with the International Award winning company The DAH Theatre. During their stay, they participated in daily physical and vocal workshops and concluded their residency by performing a devised theatre piece. They also traveled to Kennersley England where they lived and trained in Kinnersley Castle while studying Voicing Archetypes with internationally recognized singer and workshop leader Frankie Armstrong. To conclude their trip, they traveled to Statford Upon Avon, touring "Shakespeare's world" and saw a production of As You Like it by the Royal Shakespeare Company.

In 2010, students will travel again with Professor Rodgers and Frankie Armstrong to Belgrade to participate with the DAH Theatre Company for two weeks. They will also travel to Greece and perform a devised theatre piece based on the Oresteia presented in an amphitheatre ruins in the Pelopenes.

Theatre VCU has also presented at the Sibiu International Theatre Festival in Romania.
