This course presents the concepts, techniques, and processes of digital photography, including visualizing, capturing, scanning, computer manipulation, and printing. Emphasis is placed on creative picture making. Alternative approaches to photographic production may be explored as well. Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator software will be used in a Macintosh OSX operating system. No prior experience with this software is required. Knowledge of the operation of your camera is required.
Digital photography students should bring the following items to class on the first day:
• Digital camera (Point & Shoot or DSLR) with manual controls such as the ability to control shutter speed and aperture and minimum 2 GB capacity of combined memory storage
• The manual for your camera
• Cable for connecting your camera to a computer
• 10 DVD-R discs and a 8 - 16GB flash drive
• Pen and paper
• Tripod (preferred but not required)
Additional expenses:
• Textbook (approximately $35 – title to be announced)
• Printing costs (approximately $100)
Instructor Bio: Thomas J. Condon
Earning a BFA in Painting from Virginia Tech and an MFA in Photography from VCU has enabled Thomas to approach teaching and art making in many different ways. In 2007 the Virginia Museum of Fine Art recognized his unique voice with a Professional Fellowship in Printmaking. Thomas works for Virginia Commonwealth University as an Adjunct Instructor for the Department of Photography and Film and Art Foundations. For the past four years he has also worked for the School of the Arts, Deans Office, as an Education Support Specialist reviewing high school student work at National Portfolio Day events and individual school visits. Instructor Bio: Jon-Phillip Sheridan
Jon-Phillip Sheridan was born in Charlottesville, Virginia. He received his BFA in photography from the Maryland Institute, College of Art (MICA) and his MFA in Photography and Film from VCU. Jon-Phillip has had solo exhibitions at the Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville, VA and the 1709 Gallery in Richmond. His work is included in the collections of Capital One and the Federal Reserve Bank.
Sheridan has also been included in many group exhibitions including the prestigious Washington Project for the Arts "Art Auction" and Look3, Festival of the Photograph. He won an award in Blurb's international self-publishing book competition for his project "Of Cats and Fish". Jon has several upcoming solo exhibitions including at the Virginia Museum of Fine Art’s Mead Westvaco Gallery and at Mary Baldwin College.
