Student Conduct: Policies and Regulations
VCUarts Summer Intensive participants are expected to be responsible and mature members of the VCU living and learning community. Participants recognize that respect for others is essential to establishing a highly functioning living environment. Respect for both the personnel and the property of VCU is expected at all times.

Responsibilities
Each student assumes personal responsibility to maintain a climate of mutual respect and trust which fosters growth and learning. The Program Director, Head of Residence Life, Senior Counselors, Counselors, and Instructors to whom disciplinary authority is delegated are responsible for consistently and uniformly applying all policies and regulations.
General Rules
While participating in VCUarts Summer Intensive activities, no student shall violate program rules and regulations. Infractions of these rules will result in disciplinary action and may result in immediate dismissal from the Program.
We have a zero tolerance policy regarding inappropriate behavior. Students shall not behave in a disorderly or inappropriate manner, or in any other manner to interrupt or disturb the operation of their classes, the Program or its activities.
All students are responsible for the care and preservation of their rooms, study areas, and all other dormitory facilities. Damage to school property, including lost room keys and meal cards, will be repaired or replaced at the expense of the student causing the damage.
All students are expected to participate in every program activity, including meals, classes, evening activities, etc. Class attendance is required except as excused by the Program Director or a physician.
Residential students are not allowed to ride in vehicles at any time during the Program unless accompanied by a program staff member.
Students will turn off cell phones during all program activities to minimize interruptions and maximize learning.
Students must abide by curfews. Absence from the campus without the Director’s prior approval, absence from one’s assigned residence hall after curfew, visiting rooms in a residence hall assigned to the opposite sex, and harboring guests and visitors may result in immediate dismissal from the Program.
Students shall not fight or display or contribute to aggressive behavior that is disruptive or dangerous.
Students shall not willfully or maliciously injure, deface, or destroy Program property, VCU property or the property of others.
Prescription medication must remain in the possession of the student for whom it has been prescribed. Dispensing of prescription medications to others for whom they were not prescribed will result in immediate dismissal from the Program.
Students will be accompanied by a Counselor or other staff member at all times.
Violations of Virginia Code Resulting in Immediate Dismissal from the Program and Possible Prosecution Under the Law
1. According to VA Code Section 4.1-305 and related sections, no person under twenty-one years of age may lawfully purchase or possess alcoholic beverages. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited. Infractions of this law will result in dismissal from the Program and possible prosecution.
According to VA Code Sections 18.2-250 and 18.2-250.1, the possession, use, distribution, manufacture, or sale of legally controlled substances or drug paraphernalia is prohibited. Infractions of this law will result in dismissal from the Program and possible prosecution.
Smoking is prohibited for all participants, and will not be tolerated.
Graffiti and tagging are serious forms of property damage. In Richmond, this is a criminal offense that is taken very seriously by the City of Richmond police, the judicial system, the VCU police, and University officials. Several former Art Foundation students have recently completed prison terms for this offense. A first offense has a MINIMUM sentence of 90 days. The most recent sentence for a student found guilty of property damage was 15 months in jail. Any infraction of this law will result in program dismissal and possible prosecution.
Possession of a firearm, stun gun, or other weapon on school property is prohibited. Fireworks and explosives are also prohibited. Infractions of these laws will result in dismissal from the Program and possible prosecution.
Students are not to tamper with fire alarms. Any person who without just cause, calls or summons, by telephone or otherwise, any ambulance or fire-fighting apparatus, or any person who maliciously activates a manual or automatic fire alarm in any building shall be deemed guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. Such infractions will result in dismissal from the Program and possible prosecution.
Art tools such as palate knives, etc. are to be utilized only in classrooms and only
while working on art projects. They are never to be utilized to threaten other students.
7. Nothing may be thrown out of the dormitory windows. Throwing items out of the windows is a felony. Students will be immediately dismissed for such offenses.
Enforcement of Rules
The Program Director may exercise disciplinary measures, including dismissal from the Program, after giving the student notice of the charges against him or her. If the student denies the charges, he or she will have an opportunity to present his or her version of what occurred during an informal hearing that will be held as soon as possible after the alleged misconduct. During this hearing an explanation of the facts as known by Summer Intensive personnel will also be presented.
Should a student leave the Program at any time before the end of the program, regardless of the reason, no refunds will be made. |
