ABOUT THE VCU SUMMER INTENSIVE PROGRAM

WHAT TO BRING

  • Comfortable walking shoes – Students will be doing a good deal of walking around campus. You will be walking to and from meals, classes, etc. as well as on the field trips.
  • Linens for a regular-length (75” long) single bed
  • A pillow and pillow case
  • Blanket and/or bedspread
  • Mattress pad
  • Umbrella and/or raincoat
  • Toiletries
  • Towels, wash cloths and soap
  • Tissues
  • Alarm clock
  • Iron
  • Hairdryer
  • Bedside lamp (halogen lamps are not allowed)
  • Hangers for your clothes
  • Flashlight (For use in case of a power failure. A very rare occurrence. )
  • Prescription medications and any necessary over the counter medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, allergy medication, etc,
  • Laundry detergent and change (quarters) for the machines
  • Change for vending machines
  • Cell phone or a phone card – cell phones are to be turned off during all program activities
  • Optional: TV, radio/CD player, microwave, floor fans (although all rooms are air conditioned)
  • Optional: DVDs of your favorite movies for watching in the dorm
  • Snacks (e.g., popcorn, chips, etc.)
  • Band-Aids in case you get a blister due to the walking around the campus.
  • Sunscreen for Weekend Art Adventures
  • Shower shoes (optional)
  • A trashcan for your room
  • A deck of playing cards or games you enjoy
  • A refillable water bottle. It is very hot and humid in Richmond during July.
  • A bathing suit to use on your field trips, if appropriate.
  • A small amount of cash in case you want to stop by the coffee shop, buy snacks, order a pizza, buy souvenirs, etc.

 

Animation students need to bring:
• 11” x 8” acid-free Sketch book
• Composition book
• ¼” Graphing/Drafting paper – 30 sheets or more
• One pack of 8.5” x 11” copy paper
• .007mm mechanical pencils with extra lead
• Set of drawing Pencils 6H to 8B
• Prismacolor 24 color pencil set
• Portable pencil sharpener
• Kneaded rubber eraser
• 12” cork-backed ruler
• ¼” wide white artist tape
• 10” x 12” Light Tracer® - found at VCU Bookstore or the Art Market
• USB 2.0 Flash Drive formatted for PC – 256MBs or higher.
• A digital camera

None of these items are needed the first day EXCEPT a pencil, something to take notes on, and your USB 2.0 Flash Drive. All items can be bought at VCU’s Bookstore and the surrounding art stores near campus.

 

Art Online students should also bring the following:
• A digital still camera and/or a digital video camera (with two or 3 DV tapes), as well as their cables to connect them to a computer.
• A portable flash drive with at least 500 MB of storage space
• A notebook, pens or pencils, and
• At least 5 blank DVD-R discs.

Digital Filmmaking students should bring the following to class the first day:
• Digital video camera with a fire wire port (consumer grade camera is acceptable)
• Fire wire cable for connecting your camera to a computer
• Tripod
• Blank media card or DV tape appropriate for your camera
• 10 blank DVD discs
• Headphones
• Optional: highly suggested for personal storage of video files - USB 2.0 or Firewire portable hard drive 80GB or more storage space
• Paper and pen
• Before attending the first class please read the following books:

Digital Photography students need to bring:
• 6 megapixel and up Digital Camera (preferably SLR) and firewire or USB cable
• 1 or 2GB USB Flash Drive
• $50 for printing (check or cash only)
• Shoes that are good for walking/hiking

 

Fashion Design and Merchandising students need to bring:
• Scissors for cutting paper, and also fabric scissors if you have them.
• An X-acto knife and box cutter with extra blades for each.
• A glue gun if you have one.
• Rulers, a clear plastic one (18” long) and a cork back metal one (12”) if you have them
• Colored markers, pens, and pencils
• Fashion magazines, travel magazines, and any others from which you might get inspiration for a trend board
• Rubber cement
• Favorite fabric swatches and other elements to trim a presentation board (Note: Students will also shop for these supplies while they are here.)
• A notebook and pens/pencils for taking notes in class.
Note: Do not bring chewing gum. The Fashion Department does not allow gum in their work labs.

 

Theatre students need to bring:
• Clothes they can readily move in for the stage combat modules.
• Shoes with support such as good cross-training shoes or sneakers.
• Kneepads, if you already have them. No need to make a special purchase.
• Gloves to protect your hands during your stage combat training. The only requirement is that the gloves cover the entire hand including the fingers (no finger-less gloves) and be thin enough to for you to comfortably close your hand. Baseball batting gloves, fencing gauntlets or leather gardening gloves are popular choices.
• Bring all of the sheet music you have for Broadway musicals. You will need two ballads and two up-tempo pieces. These pieces will be worked on during class.
• A towel
• Bring a tape recorder and a tape for “Musical Theatre.”
• Notebook and pencil for “Acting for the Camera”
• Two nice outfits: one casual, one suit for the men and one nice dress or suit for women. Also bring the necessary accessories for shoots for “Acting for the Camera”
• 2 VHS tapes for “Acting for the Camera”
• One 1minute monologue memorized from a play, TV show or movie, or feature film. Bring a typed copy of the monologue. Pick a role that is the same age as you are. This monologue will be presented the first day of your “Acting for the Camera” class.

2D/3D students (please bring all supplies listed under Sculpture, Drawing and Painting) need to bring to class on the first day:
• A labeled CD that our skilled photographer can use to store documented images of your work on so you will have a very professional portfolio to submit with college applications.

 

Sculpture
• 2’’ disposable brush
• Plastic mix and measure container (2.5 quart size))
• Surform Rasp (Stanley model #21-115)
• Sharpie fine point marker
• Serrated bread knife (this can be purchased here for those of you flying into Richmond)

 

Drawing: Students will be going to the art store on the first day of class. Materials can be purchased at that time, or brought from home.
• Sketch book (any size you prefer)
• 18”x 24” pad of big drawing paper
• 18” x 24 pad of newsprint
• Colored medium of choice (colored pencils, pastels, markers, oil pastels)
• Vine charcoal (soft)
• Ruler
• Chamois – (available at K-Mart, automotive and/or art supply stores)
• A white vinyl eraser and a kneaded eraser

 

Painting:
• Liquitex Acrylic Paint (Tubes) colors-Cadmium Red, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium
Yellow (Lemon or Light), Orange, Light Green, Violet/Purple, Titanium White.
If there is a student grade on sale in a pack, purchase it if it includes Red, Blue, and Yellow.
• Acrylic Gel Medium (extend paint)
• Palette knife
• White palette
• 9 x 12 inch pad of Bristol Board (20 sheets)
• Assorted size and shapes of paints brushes (round/flat/fan) - Pre packed
• Three sheets of 22 x 30 inch arches paper (100% cotton rag) 130 lbs
• Artist tape (white roll)
• Empty spray bottle-for water
• Clear plastic container to hold water (wide mouth, flat bottom, with a lid)
• Paper towels or rags
• Pencil
• Eraser
• Pencil Sharpener
• Scissors
• 6 x 8 inch mirror (no smaller/get from hair store, Walmart, etc.)
• Sketchbook (any size)
• Small 3 ring binder
• Colorwheel (any size)
• Metal ruler (at least 12 inches)
• Art Bin or container to hold all materials (except paper & ruler)
• Smock or Apron (paint clothes)

 

Special Note: Valuables - VCU will not assume responsibility for any lost or damaged items, therefore recommends that no valuable items such as jewelry or laptop computers be brought with you. Students are encouraged to bring travelers’ checks to cover personal expenses while attending the program. A small amount of money might be needed for personal expenses and souvenirs, as well as throughout the program.
