vcuarts_navigation_spacer Research: Faculty Research Support Programs

The School of the Arts offers its faculty four programs supporting research. In all cases, research is defined as including exhibition, performance, and publication. Application requirements for all programs require a minimum one-page program-specific proposal, a one-page detailed budget (budget not required for Faculty Research Reassignment Program or American Academy in Rome fellowship), and current resume, submitted electronically by September 15 to Susan K. Roth, VCUarts Associate Dean for Research & Academic Affairs: skroth@vcu.edu

Dean’s Exploratory Research Underwriting Program (see first paragraph for application instructions)
Provides funding to support research explorations at the development stage where no definite outcomes may be predicted. Preference is given to faculty who have not received support from the School’s Research Reassignment or Research Grant programs. Grants are made by the Dean based on recommendations by a panel of the School’s Assistant and Associate Deans. Grant range is up to $5,000. Recipients may reapply for support each time a call for proposals is made, but the expectation is that Research Underwriting awards will lead to successful applications for support from the Research Grant and Research Reassignment programs or external funding.

Dean’s Faculty Research Grant Program
(see first paragraph for application instructions)
Provides funding to support the final stages of research for which outcomes have been determined. The venues for realization of research results are a determining factor in the award of grants. Grants are made by the Dean based on recommendations by a panel of the School’s Assistant/Associate Deans. Grant range is up to $7,000. Previous recipients may reapply for support annually. Faculty Research Grant awards may be combined with a Research Reassignment.

Faculty Research Reassignment Program
Provides release time from teaching (and in some cases, service obligations) to pursue significant research efforts for which venues for anticipated outcomes have been established. National implications for the faculty recipients, their departments and the School of the Arts are important selection criteria. Awards are made by the Dean based on recommendations from a selection committee composed of elected members of the School’s Faculty Advisory Committee and department chairs. Previous recipients may reapply three years following the academic year of reassignment.

The deadline for submitting a proposal for residency during the 2009-2010 academic year is September 15 .

The American Academy in Rome is more than a building situated on the highest and most mythically rich hills of the city. It is a remarkable community of artists, writers, composers, performers, commercial and landscape designers, and scholars.  In concert with the city itself, this community offers its members new perspectives on the familiar, intellectual challenges to long held assumptions, and entrée to new and innovative sights, sounds, and ideas. It is a community that invites convivial dialectical exchange, thereby providing an opportunity to tap into the creativity and knowledge of others. Known for its “field trips,” which take residents behind doors that are typically locked, and celebrated for its impromptu as well as organized concerts, lectures, and exhibitions by Academy Fellows, Residents, and guests, the American Academy is an environment rife with life-enriching potential.

While at the Academy for a 4 to 6 week stay, the Affiliate Fellow will receive:

  • A single room with a private bath
  • Lunch and dinner six days a week
  • The opportunity to sign up for Academy trips and tours
  • Access to all concerts, lectures, exhibitions, readings and symposia
  • Access to all scholarly resources
  • VCUArts will provide a round trip coach ticket to Rome
  • VCUArts will pay for a studio at the Academy if one is available during the time of the residency
  • VCUArts will provide part time salary funding to the department of the Affiliate Fellow to cover the courses
  • All other expenses are the responsibility of the Affiliate Fellow
