TCG Magazine: American Theatre
-- Elizabeth Egloff
American Theatre Magazine gives you one of the best ways to stay current with the regional theatre scene without traveling through nearly every state in the country. Playwriting is a business and as in any other art form, it pays to know what's happening beyond the walls of wherever you're putting dialogue on paper.
The Magazine's an invaluable resource for playwrights. Special features in addition to monthly news on theatres, new plays, and trends . . .
- Season Preview
Combined with the Dramatists Source Book, this annual listing of plays set for the season of each rep company gives you a good way to tell which theatres might be interested in the subject and style of your latest play.
- Theatre Facts
The annual summary of the financial health of the nation's nonprofit theatres is both sobering and helpful in understanding the non-artistic forces that may influence the selection of a theatre's season and the new plays it does.
- Playscript Series
The full script of a new play, usually recently produced by a TCG-member theatre, appears every other month in the magazine -- and usually before publication in book form. Since you need to be reading what's current, this feature more than pays for your subscription.
American Theatre now shows up on magazine racks at very large bookstores and small specialty bookshops. But subscribing directly from TCG is the cheapest way to get it.
