• Emily Swinson, a Junior Fashion Merchandising student at VCUarts Department of Fashion Design and Merchandising, has been selected as a recipient of a Freeman ASIA Award for the spring semester 2007. Emily is the first VCU student ever to receive this award and she will study fashion and marketing in Japan beginning in March 2007.

• Hyun Kyung Yoon, a second year MFA student in the Department of Craft/Material Studies, Ceramics, has been invited to be an artist for the 2007 Cheongju International Craft Biennale in Korea later this year. This is a major international exhibition.

VCU Department of Music Jazz Trumpet major, Marcus Tenney, placed third in the 2007 National Trumpet Competition's Jazz Division earlier this month.

• Arthur Hash, an adjunct professor in several VCUarts departments, has been honored with a 2007 American Craft Council Searchlight Artist Award. The ACC Baltimore show was February 21 - 25.

• Sayaka "Junior" Suzuki, of the Department of Craft/Material Studies, has been invited to teach a workshop at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York in 2008.

• The Department of Theatre wins big at the 2007 Southeastern Theatre Conference's 58th Annual Convention's Design Competition in Atlanta. VCUarts students took home 8 out of 15 awards.

• VCUQ, in partnership with the Ministry of Civil Service Affairs and Housing and Qatar Foundation, held the annual design conference Tasmeem Doha 2007 March 5-8. Speakers included Dr. David Suzuki, an award -winning scientist, environmentalist and broadcaster and Chair of the David Suzuki Foundation and Cameron Sinclair, co-founder and executive director of Architecture for Humanity. This year's theme was sustainable design and "Sometimes, you just have to do it yourself."

Winners of the Design Competition were: 1st place, Joanne Marie Bermej from the Al Khor International School; 2nd place, Mohammed Ahmad Al Hussain from The Cambridge School; and 3rd place, Anjali Bhat from the MES Indian School.
